Yet another study by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, involving 2.6 million mature-age workers, has found 13% never want to retire, and 41% intend to transition into part-time work before they retire.

That’s over 1 million people hoping to leave full-time work and take up a part-time arrangement, for 65% of them, with their current employer.

Despite the many warnings to Corporate Australia of the need to retain their mature-age workforce, and the benefits of servicing an increasingly mature-aged marketplace with age-appropriate employees, all the evidence suggests Australian employers are not listening. Age discrimination against mature-age job seekers, and the disproportionate representation of mature-age employees in retrenchment and downsizing activities, continues unabated, despite the existence of blatantly ineffective laws banning such practices.

My strongest recommendation to those mature-age workers banging their heads against an employer-constructed wall of discrimination – “Create and control your own future – catch the entrepreneurial bug and start your own business.”

Who better than these mature-age Australians seeking to remain engaged and productive to recognise and develop the limitless niches of demand created by their similarly-aged peers?
