Travelling with your pet is a situation where you are wise to “Expect the best time, and prepare for the worst”. Take it, and you hopefully won’t need it.
Here is a starting Check List of what to take for your travelling pet, for you to consider and add to depending on your specific travel plans:-
- Your pet’s medical history, vaccination records and vet’s contact details
- Pet’s medication for the duration of the trip, plus a margin of 2-3 days
- Emergency First Aid kit – bandages, antiseptic solution, tweezers
- Recent photo of your pet for ID purposes
- Sturdy collar and lead, with ID tags showing holiday address and mobile phone you will have with you. The phone number of your empty home won’t help.
- Fresh drinking water
- Usual food, and can opener if required (Don’t rely on buying your pet’s food in transit – not a good time for a forced diet change)
- Food and water bowls
- Toys, ball, treats
- Bedding, and travel basket if appropriate
- Grooming brushes
- Pooper scooper and plastic bags
- Paper towels for clean ups, and old towels for drying wet dogs
- If camping out, a torch for night walks, flashing red light, reflective vest or glow sticks to tie to your pet’s collar. Be very careful in rural areas– baits are used for wild dogs, and paralysis ticks are a real threat.
